Green Hydrogen in Westre, Germany
Green Hydrogen for the Regional Energy Transition
Grenzland Bürgerenergie eG is relying on Quest One's PEM electrolysis technology for sustainable hydrogen production in Schleswig-Holstein.

How Grenzland Bürgerenergie Transformed Renewable Power Into a Regional Hydrogen Solution
With the expansion of renewable energy generation, the need to efficiently store surplus electricity and make it available for flexible use is becoming increasingly important. To address this challenge, Grenzland Bürgerenergie eG set out to establish a regional hydrogen project that converts renewable energy into a versatile energy carrier while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The project is supported by the State of Schleswig-Holstein and makes an important contribution to the energy transition as well as regional value creation.
The objective was to find an electrolysis solution capable of reliably operating with fluctuating power outputs from wind and solar installations while ensuring a continuous supply of green hydrogen.
To implement the project, Grenzland Bürgerenergie eG selected four Quest One ME450 PEM electrolyzers. Powered exclusively by electricity from renewable energy sources, the systems produce green hydrogen through electrolysis without direct CO₂ emissions. Thanks to PEM technology, the electrolyzers can respond flexibly to fluctuations in power generation, making them ideally suited for integration with wind and solar energy systems.
